Havana, Jun 2 (ACN) In this capital, which dawned drenched by persistent rain, 25 electric tricycles that will alleviate the transportation situation in the municipality of Boyeros began to circulate today.

The network of vehicles with low carbon emissions is intended to improve internal mobility within the territory and provide greater autonomy, without the need to go to the main bus routes, said Marta Oramas Rivero, first deputy minister of Transport.

Each tricycle has a capacity for six people, she said during the inauguration of the routes, the result of the Neomovilidad project, executed by the General Directorate of Provincial Transportation of Havana (DGTPH) and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

According to Reinier Campos Pompa, head of the DGTPH’s Development Directorate, the tricycles are operated in the Wajay Popular Council, with three routes: to the Abel Santamaría, Wajay and Fontanar neighborhoods, all of which cover distances of two to four kilometers.

He told Agencia Cubana de Noticias that the vehicles, assembled by the Roselló Company, have an approximate range of 120 kilometers and the cost of the fare is four pesos.

We decided to implement the solution in that area of Boyeros, he explained, because it is very busy, with an internal population that needs to be provided with alternative mobility to that of the main routes of P12 and P16.

The project also finances the photovoltaic energy to the Unión Eléctrica so that the vehicles can be fully charged with this renewable energy source, said the person who is also in charge of the project.

Elaine Baró Angueira, driver of the Wajay tricycle route, explained to ACN that she chose her new job because she always enjoyed driving and learned about the possibility through the call in the media, coinciding with the time when she was looking for a job.

She said that the 13 women and 12 men underwent several training courses, and in her case she obtained a professional driver’s license.

Maribel Gutiérrez, UNDP resident representative in Cuba, acknowledged the benefits of the initiative, which already exists in other highly populated areas such as Central Havana and Old Havana, while highlighting its contribution to the preservation of the environment, in line with the Task Life.

The inauguration of the three new routes was attended by Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, Minister of Transportation, Luis Antonio Torres Iribar, First Secretary of the Party in Havana, and Reinaldo García Zapata, Governor of the province.
